PNG vs JPG vs WebP: which format should you use?

Every image format makes a different trade-off between file size, quality, and features. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it the right choice for logos, icons, screenshots, and any graphic with sharp edges or text — but photos saved as PNG are often 5–10× larger than they need to be. JPG uses lossy compression tuned for photographs: gradients, skin tones, and natural scenes compress beautifully, but it can't store transparency and repeated re-saving degrades quality. WebP is the modern all-rounder — it supports both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency, and typically produces files 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG or PNG. When should you convert?

• Convert to WebP when publishing images on a website — smaller files mean faster pages and better Core Web Vitals.
• Convert to JPG when a service only accepts JPG (some CMSs, print shops, and older email clients), or when you need maximum compatibility with legacy software.
• Convert to PNG when you need transparency preserved, or you plan to edit the image further and want to avoid stacking lossy compression artifacts.

Things to know before converting

Conversion can't recover quality that's already gone — turning a heavily compressed JPG into a PNG produces a bigger file with the same artifacts baked in. Going the other way, converting a transparent PNG to JPG flattens the transparency onto a background color, so keep a PNG or WebP original if you need the cutout. For the sharpest results, always convert from the highest-quality source you have.
