Converting PNG to JPG is the right call for photographs and the wrong call for graphics, and the difference is worth thirty seconds of thought because it is irreversible in two ways.
Transparency is discarded. JPG has no alpha channel, so anything transparent is filled with white. For a photograph, irrelevant. For a logo you intend to place on a coloured background, fatal — you will get a white rectangle around it and there is no way to recover the cutout from the JPG. Keep the PNG, or convert to WebP, which supports transparency and is smaller than both.
Sharp edges soften. JPEG compression is tuned for gradients and natural detail. Screenshots, diagrams, and anything with small text develop visible fringing around the edges. If your PNG is a screenshot, converting it to JPG makes it both blurrier and, quite often, no smaller.
Where it pays off enormously is photographs. A 12-megapixel photo stored as PNG can be 25 MB; the same image as a high-quality JPG is around 2 MB, with no visible difference. If someone has sent you photos as PNGs, this conversion will save you an order of magnitude.

Why convert PNG to JPG?
Two reasons. Size: a photograph saved as PNG is routinely 5-10× larger than the same image as JPG, because PNG stores every pixel losslessly. And compatibility: some upload forms, print shops, and older systems accept JPG only. For photographs, JPG is almost always the right delivery format.
What happens to transparency?
JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are flattened onto a white background. If you need the cutout preserved, convert to WebP instead, or keep the PNG. This is the one conversion you cannot undo.
Will the image lose quality?
